BY-LAWS FOR THE KENDALL UNIT OF
ILLINOIS RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
Article I - NAME
The name of this organization shall be Kendall Unit of Illinois Retired Teachers Association hereafter called KRTA.
Article II – PURPOSE & MISSION
The purpose of the Association shall be to work to maintain and improve benefits to annuitants of TRS, promote education and the professional, social, and economic status of all members, and to work in cooperation with other organizations to gain these goals. The Illinois Retired Teachers Association is a not-for-profit, non-partisan organization of retired educators. KRTA serves the needs and interests of its members through advocacy, education, cooperation and socialization in a flexible organizational structure.
Article III –MEMBERSHIP AND DUES
Section 1. KRTA shall have three classifications of membership: Active, Associate, and Pre-retirement.
Article IV – OFFICERS
Section 1. The officers of this unit shall be president, first vice-president, second vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. These officers together with the immediate past-president and chairpersons of standing committees shall constitute the Executive Committee.

Article VI – MEETINGS
There shall be five meetings a year with Executive Committee meetings prior to regular meetings. Meetings shall be held in February, April, June, September, and December at places designated by the officers. Additional meetings shall be called when advisable.
Article VII – AMENDMENTS
Amendments to the By-Laws may be presented at any meeting and voted upon at the following meeting. A two-thirds vote of the members present is required for the adoption of the amendment.

Article III –MEMBERSHIP AND DUES

- Active: Any retired certified staff member of public or
private schools, colleges, or universities, or spouse of a deceased member with
full membership privileges shall be eligible as an active member with the right
to vote and hold office.
- Associate: Any person interested in education and approved for
membership by the KRTA officers or the Executive Committee shall be eligible as
an Associate member without the right to vote or hold office.
- Pre-retirement: Any certified Illinois public or private
school staff member who anticipates retirement within five years is eligible as
a Pre-retirement member without the right to vote or hold office.
Article IV – OFFICERS
Section 1. The officers of this unit shall be president, first vice-president, second vice-president, secretary, and treasurer. These officers together with the immediate past-president and chairpersons of standing committees shall constitute the Executive Committee.
Section 2. Qualifications and terms of office:
- Officers, elected and
appointed, must be active members of the Association.
- The elected officers shall
assume office on January 1 for two years following their election in September.
The President and Treasurer will be elected in odd-numbered years. The 1st
Vice President, 2nd Vice President(s) and Secretary will be elected
in even-numbered years.
- In the event of a vacancy in
the office of president, the first vice-president shall assume the office for
the remainder of the term and is also eligible to serve a full term as
president.
- Should a vacancy occur in
any office, other than president, the president with the approval of the
Executive Committee shall appoint a replacement for the remainder of the term.
- The president shall have
such powers and authority as are usual and shall have other powers and duties
as may be assigned by the Executive Committee. The president shall appoint
members of all committees.
- The first vice-president
shall preside at the meetings in the absence of the president. The first
vice-president shall assume responsibilities for preparation and editing of the
Newsletter. The first vice-president shall perform such other duties as
assigned by the president of the Executive Committee.
- The second vice-president
shall serve as program chairperson and along with the Executive Committee shall
prepare programs for the year in advance.
The second vice-president shall perform such other duties as assigned by
the president of the Executive Committee.
- The secretary shall keep the
minutes of all meetings and serve as the official correspondent for the
Unit. The secretary shall perform other
duties as assigned by the president or the Executive Committee.
- The treasurer shall be
responsible for the supervision of all financial affairs of the Unit, including
preparation of annual budget. The
treasurer shall perform other duties as assigned by the president or the
Executive Committee.

STANDING RULES (Adopted December 14, 2000)
- A $10.00 memorial gift shall
be made to the IRTA Foundation upon the death of a member present or past.
- Convention Fees. The Unit will pay all registration fees for
eligible delegates and also provide delegate expenses as approved by the Board.
- Lunch shall be paid for by
the Unit for any new or prospective member attending his/her first meeting.
- A luncheon reservation made
should be paid for, even if unattended.
